A ghost town. That was the first phrase that floated into my head. Thick fog hovered over the village as we exited the bus. The air was the temperature of a dead man’s skin. I rubbed the goose bumps on my arms. Kiruma, who was standing next to me, looked unbothered.

“Why is it so cold here?”

“Maybe if you wore something other than that stupid Hawaiian shirt…”

“What does my shirt have to do with anything?”

“You always show up looking like a clown; how are we supposed to question people with you looking like that?”

“Don’t blame me just because you suck at questioning people.”

Kiruma kicked me in the shin. What happened to the nice, friendly Kiruma from last night, back when he was taking care of his daughter? I guessed my time with Ryouko had fooled me into letting my guard down. Kiruma snorted, as if he could tell what I was thinking.

“Sorry, but you’re stuck with me again.”

“Ryouko was no walk in the park, either. Is it just me, or is that lady scary?”

Kiruma’s eyes widened. He exhaled heavily.

“You finally noticed, huh?”

“So it isn’t just me, then!”

Kiruma picked up the pace, as if trying to brush off the topic.

“Ryouko has already investigated this village, but apparently, she didn’t discover anything. That’s why she’s sending us in for a second look.”

“But why? Isn’t that just a waste of time?”

“Don’t ask me. Who knows what goes on in that woman’s head.”

I shrugged.

“Well, I’m glad I’m stuck with you again. But only by process of elimination. I’d rather not be here at all, if I had a choice.”

“I can’t argue with that. Partner aside, it would be better not to have anything to do with the gods at all.”

Kiruma continued walking. For once, he didn’t kick me in the shin. The road leading down the hill was shrouded in mist.
